Artist's Statement

Secret Base explores a world that came to me over 2 years ago. This world reflects my life, yet is filled with odd colourful birds, miniature humanoid creatures, and whimsical fish. This fantastical world has been my escape and provided comfort when I needed it. My work represents my emotional highs and lows and coming of age without loud urban noise, just the calmness of nature and whimsical creatures.

The quiet, surreal and ethereal world depicted in my work is home to creatures as well as human characters. These human characters are an extension of myself and depict how someone could be present in this world. Each piece is filled with small details and hidden surprises—’Easter eggs’—meant to be discovered by both the human characters in this fantastical world and the audience viewing it. I hope this exhibition serves as a window into another world—a safe place where visitors can escape, allowing their minds to wander freely and comfortably as they discover unexpected details.
