Accessible British Columbia Act

Our committee will help us identify barriers to using the Library. They also give us advice on how to tackle the challenges our community may face when accessing our programming and services.

To best reflect Coquitlam, our Accessibility Committee will be compose of:

• People with disabilities or people who support those with disabilities (at least half of the total committee membership);
• People with Indigenous status;
• People with experience with other barriers such as new Canadians, English as an Additional Language (EAL), or those who provide services for these communities.

Coquitlam Public Library is part of a long tradition of libraries ensuring their communities have access to the information, resources, and services they need. We have started down the path of total community inclusivity by making our branches accessible and welcoming, and we recognize that more can always be done. Some of our current collections include:

• Audiobook collection
• Large print collection 
• Lendable DAISY players
• Home delivery service
• CELA accessible library services
• Interlink accessible collections
• Braille books for children

Our current branch accessibility features include:

• Low service counter at Help Desk
• Wheelchair accessible washrooms with barrier free entry
• Designated handicapped parking stalls
• Automatic entrance doors at Poirier branch to allow larger mobility aids easier access

Our Accessibility Committee will help identify additional barriers and challenges for our 3-year plan. The committee will approach the Library and its services with an eye on:

2. Adaptability
3. Diversity
4. Collaboration
5. Self-determination
6. Universal design
