Indigenous Resources

Through providing space for knowledge keepers and Elders to share their voices and practices, access to public resources, and book lists to explore, we hope to educate our community on the history of Indigenous peoples, the ongoing impact of residential schools, and the reconciliation process.

Our Role & Commitment

Learning the true history of Indigenous peoples is an important step for all Canadians.

At Coquitlam Public Library, we recognize the vital role libraries play in supporting Truth and Reconciliation by offering resources that foster understanding, reflection, and healing—aligned with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.

Start your learning journey with us through curated collections of books and films, events featuring local Indigenous Elders and knowledge keepers, and links to trusted external resources.

Indigenous Collection

The Library is happy to highlight works written or produced by Indigenous authors, as well as works that promote understanding of Indigenous lives and experiences. Learn about the titles in our Indigenous collections by exploring our curated lists.

Explore

Our core Indigenous Collection section is found inside the City Centre branch, next to the Pinetree Way entrance. There you will find a thoughtfully-curated selection of books and resources that reflects the histories, voices, and experiences of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. At the moment, this section contains only children’s material, and will be regularly evaluated to allow for growth, expanding into teens and adult titles as well.

Special Collections

In addition to the contemporary works featured in our booklists above, we are fortunate to house collections of Indigenous works both fiction and nonfiction that were chosen by local Indigenous elders and leaders. Take time to explore personal and historical stories donated by local Indigenous author and elder, Alf Dumont.
