Be a Reading Buddy
Reading Buddies is a program that pairs teens in high school with kids in grades 1 to 4. It's a great way for kids to practice reading, and for teens to accumulate volunteer service hours.
Sessions run in the fall (October / November), the winter (February / March) and the summer (July / August) at both branches of the Library. The Library often runs a spring session during April / May at the City Centre Branch only.
Who can be a Reading Buddy?
Big Buddies must be at least 14 years old and in grades 9, 10, 11 or 12. Little Buddies must be in grades 1, 2, 3 or 4. For the summer sessions, we will accept applications for teens who have finished grade 8, and kids who have completed Kindergarten.
When do the Reading Buddies meet?
During the school year, teens and kids meet from 3:45–4:45 p.m. During Summer 2017, meetings will run from 2 to 3 p.m.
Next Sessions: Summer 2017
City Centre Branch, Room 137
Thursdays, July 6 to 27 (July session)
Thursdays, Aug. 3 to 31 (August session)
Poirier Branch, Nancy Bennett Room
Wednesdays, July 5 to 26 (July session)
Wednesdays, Aug. 2 to 30 (August session)
How can I join the Reading Buddies?
We will release application forms for the summer sessions in late May, early June 2017. PDF copies will be available on this page.
The deadline to apply for the summer sessions is Wednesday, June 21.
Teen volunteers who are new to the program will be required to undergo a criminal record check at the Coquitlam RCMP detachment.
Since Reading Buddies is a one-to-one reading program, a volunteer is needed for every child. If more kids than teens apply, the library will determine successful applicants by doing a lottery-style draw. Any children not selected are placed on a wait-list. All applicants will be notified of their child's status.
